This loosely drafted sentiment
reflects my views regarding the European
Doberman in America. The Doberman Pinscher today, as I see it. We
all have
our opinions. Here's mine.
When we hear the term European Doberman it
should suggest a stronger more
robust animal with the genetic focus required for an intense working
drive. It will
also remind us that these are Dobermans who have a keen edge for
protection and
their roots have not been compromised by the breeding down for the
docile qualities
of many American show dogs. Most American breeders are now
changing their
standards and are adapting to lessons given by European breeders.
We must breed
our very best American lines to these athletic Euros and train
vigorously. The dog
sport of Schutzhund has helped develop and maintain the balance and
performance
levels of the Euro both mentally and physically over the years.
The somewhat larger head and rounded chest are
characteristic of the thick boned
powerful Euro and their only true colors are black and rust and red
(brown) and rust.
These Dobermans look the part of a well trained athlete and they
generally show
the royalty of their bloodline by their appearance. Just put it
together yourself,
the typical Euro we see coming into the USA is the product of a pair
of intensely
trained protection animals with pedigrees filled with titled champions, meanwhile here in America the typical
Doberman is an
untrained animal usually living in a house full of children with
somebody photographing him wearing crazy clothes and posing him with stuffed rabbits and
baby house
cats. Ok, there's nothing wrong with that if it's what you like,
but only you can decide where your time and money is better spent.
Having said all this, I'm not here to discount
the well bred American Doberman. It's
in the minds of many that the American Doberman has been bred to a
higher sense of
intelligence than most. And let's not be surprised if in the near
future Europeans
begin breeding the better American lines with their stock. After
all, it has been the
United States that has kept this breed alive and well from the
1950's through the 1980's. For example, most Doberman Pinschers found
today in the British Isles are from
American bloodlines. America has been the best source for quality
Dobermans
world-wide for over 60 years. But it has become a general belief
here that our
American breeders have let it slip during the past two decades.
Between backyard
breeder experimentation and AKC shows, the American Doberman
Pinscher has taken a pretty hard hit. American Kennel
Club shows are the number
one reason working drive has been bred out of our working
class dogs like German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Doberman
Pinschers, so understandably it shouldn't be a mystery why the American
military as well as police departments
everywhere insist on using European
working dog stock. Protection training is key and show is for show, but it's
the Euro that has it
all together and this is the reason they are here and the reason
they will stay here.
Russian Dobermans: Well, they're
here too. Maybe Chinese Dobermans are next? The Russian
Dobermans are here because Russians are here I suppose, as well as
many eastern Europeans who seem to like them a lot too. Many of
these Dobermans are excellent examples of well trained working dogs
and some of the these trainers and working dog kennels are considered
top notch. They are basically breeding and cross breeding with
the same Euro bloodlines we all know about. Just be
careful who you purchase from as anything new can easily be exploited.
I'm not sure why we need Russian Dobermans
but they're here and seem to be doing fine, so who knows maybe I'll own one
someday!
A quick word about importing a European puppy.
We Americans are cash cows to European breeders and there is no
reason they should ever sell you a prize puppy, not even for a lot
of money. My suggestion for most folks looking to get a really
top quality Euro import is to buy an adult champion. It will
cost you but you are less likely to lose in the deal.
This high dollar Euro thing is all about to change here anyway as the United States
Doberman
market continues
to be flooded with Euros and that's a good thing for our breed!
Let us hope for and let us allow this new Euro invasion to help
make it possible for American Schutzhund Titles to rule
the new day!
Our Accursed Albino Doberman Backyard Breeding Industry
Z Factored Dobermans
Albino
Doberman Pinscher breeding is a cruel modern day plague that
continues to painfully torture thousands of innocent animals
everyday here in the United States. Where are the animal
rights people? Why do "pups for sale" websites and
local newspapers continue to advertise for these breeder-bandits? If
there ever was a case for
American breeders, kennels and dog lovers to get together on
common ground, this is it. This sorry mess is much
more pervasive in America than most people realize. Check it out, if someone were exclusively breeding sick
human beings who were all diseased with diabetes or cancer, wouldn't
you think they should be stopped and probably imprisoned? Well,
this is what we have with the Z factor Doberman. These poor
devils are the products of bad breeding practices but are still being bred and sold
just the same as fancy white Dobermans when in fact
they are all sick animals. Beautiful as puppies but as they grow
in age they experience hair loss, painful skin disease and worsening
eye sight. The typical albino breeder will see
their pup's eyes constantly squinting but they somehow never feel the pain of
that squinting little puppy. These pups will
eventually go blind if kept in the sunlight and not indoors. As vet bills pile up many of these dogs
waste away and die in backyards without attention or care.
These
breeders are nonconformists who irresponsibly sell their sick dogs
to a naive general public on a vast national scale for $200, $300 or
as much as they can get. It's all about the money no matter
what else they tell you. Albino breeders are either in denial
or they are delusional or they just damn don't care. These
strange people range from the seemingly educated who live in their
own fantasy nightmare world of, "if I could just breed two more
generations, I'll have created the perfect healthy white Doberman",
to the out and out dumb ass hillbilly who wouldn't know a well bred
Doberman Pinscher if one walked up behind him and bit him on the
ass! Pity there isn't a watch organization calling for
the neutering and spaying of these breeders.
Not
all Z factored Dobermans are white or "cream" or "golden" as they
may call them, and most carriers look like totally normal Dobermans, but all Z factors
will eventually throw a white pup or white litter. The
Doberman Pinscher Club of America (DPCA) asks that these Z factors
be neutered or spayed, as they well should be. If you own one,
please keep him indoors, love him, pamper him but neuter or spay
them. By the way, not all of these albinos and Z factor
carriers have a WZ
prefix on their AKC registration number. Some may have the
prefixes WS, WE, WF, WP, etc and the only possible way we have to check the status of
a Doberman from the street is to check his pedigree against the
Z LIST. If you are buying a new Doberman puppy locally off the street,
please check his pedigree with the Z
LIST before you make the purchase. (You may follow the
links here or the Z List can be found
on the DPCA website.) His albino ancestors, if they
exist, will certainly be there. You may be saving yourself a
big vet expense and maybe saving yourself a lot of personal grief by checking
before you buy. A Doberman puppy without
registration papers in America today will usually mean albino or
albino carrier. The introduction of the modern European
Doberman Pinscher onto American soil may very well help us off-set
this albino cancer by way of re-establishing a new universal
recognition of what the Doberman Ideal is or should be.
Trying to be somewhat knowledgeable of pedigrees is a must for all
of us in today's Doberman Pinscher world and even if that checks out
fine I'm still not breeding to a blue or a fawn.
Skin disease anyone?
Lastly, another sad reality to this is that the AKC still registers albinos.
The AKC
will register any dog of the same breed parents who are already registered
with them so long as you will pay the AKC their fee. The AKC
seems to care
less if these sick dogs are being bred and sold. Once again,
it's all about the money and not the breed. What
are we supposed to do with that? When the American
Kennel Club registers an albino Doberman they are promoting a sick
and ill animal who feels pain everyday and is costing their owners a
bundle in vet bills, not to mention making it possible for outlaw
breeders to continue making more money and continue breeding more
sick animals. I think the AKC's policy with continuing to
register these poor sick albino Dobermans is beginning to make me sick
too!
We all have our personal tastes, our likes and
dislikes for one kennel or bloodline or another and it is this
diversity that helps make raising our Dobermans a treat. All
breeders are mostly following their individual pursuits in
perfecting the breed but I believe the real payoff for breeders are
the accomplishments each kennel line has had in helping to improve
beauty, stamina, athletics and that magnificent Doberman super
intelligence. You should always know in your heart that the
new litter you are now casting into the world will be just a little
better for the good of it all, simply because you were there to make
sure it was so! And that is a very nice feeling to have.
Let us enjoy these wonderful Dobermans and
let's have fun with it and work hard everyday and most importantly,
we should look good doing it!
Thanks, Keith
